There was always cool shit for sale and lots of hammocks. And they had vending machines with ice cream sandwiches that my dad, my brother and I would eat while watching the planes out the window. It was cheap entertainment, my dad’s favorite kind.

It was cheap entertainment, my dad ’ s favorite kind.

Universal. I don ’ t know anyone in my age group who wouldn ’ t consider their dad cheap when they were growing up (except for the occasional doctor ’ s kids, but they usually have horrible bankruptcy stories, too).

Now as a dad I look at my family vacations — including the multi - thousand - dollar ones — and see myself nitpicking over refillable drinks and things like that. That ’ s the circle of life.
